Paper beads are inexpensive, easy-to-make and attractive to look at. You could use them in many types of projects such as jewellery making, curtain beading etc. Turn those colourful pages from old magazine or unused wrapping paper into beautiful piece of art.
This week, I was putting together an instruction sheet on THE HIVE "HOW TO..." series. Below is a video on "HOW TO MAKE PAPER BEADS".

Valentine's Day is coming soon and so the making of pop-up card, I decided to try out. Not bad for a first attempt.
As for the display, I played with large decorative font and a huge heart featuring the covers of romantic novels. Well, I've invested a great deal of time trying my hands at new crafts. It was a good learning curve (the sewing part). Sewing on felt is so tough. Baby shoes didn't look nearly like one on my 1st attempt. Nonetheless, I am so pleased with my plushy owl.
Today, we (Jacqui, Suzanne, Nadiyah & I) went to the German European School to check out their D&T department. Their workshops were located in quite far away from the main school. We had to walk quite a distance to get there but it was a great walk after the rain. We had to cross a long wooden bridge which suspended across a jungle and a little stream. The experience was as though we were trekking in the nature reserve. We saw spiders, squirrels and other creepy crawlies (I shall not further elaborate). Nonetheless, it was a good walk (have I not stressed that earlier?!). The teacher who greeted us there was very friendly and helpful showing us around. We also witnessed their students in action and learned a thing or 2 about some of their projects and equipment. It was about lunchtime, so Jacqui & Suzanne has to go back to school to attend their Christmas lunch. Nadiyah and me headed off to the Science Art Museum to see Living with Leonardos. It was an exciting day for us. We silk-screened, learned to hologram, tried out the 3D doodler and (my favourite) got our heads 3D printed. We might introduce some of the things we learnt at the museum to you during our upcoming HIVE launch (dates to be confirmed). Nadiyah & I went 'crafty' yesterday at the Little Academy, POMO. We had the whole Wednesday making stuff with Tin. Oh, Tin was our art teacher for the day. She called it our Makenesday. Actually, the workshop were meant for kids (so we were the biggest kids in class - buahahahaha *so shameless*). Nonetheless we were pleased with ourselves as we went home with our crafts. We were as happy as 5-year-olds but without our mothers to fetch us home (haha).
The photos below are taken by Tin. We were too busy making so forgotten to take more photos. You could find more of her crafts and photos on FB. Presenting you one of Senior Library's reading activity for the Year-8 students - Science Fiction. Well, it is the same site as the reading list - Conflict. Jacqui and I has agreed to use only one site due to the following reasons: 1. To keep and not use up all the 10 websites per account (currently we are maintaining 1 account - Atiqah's work email account) 2. To maintain one website per year group - e.g. only published one theme and hide the rest (Weebly has this hide function which is very useful). Therefore, the year 8 students could view one theme during that particular period. The challenge for this project is to cite all the images and videos. The Senior Library uses the Harvard system for referencing. So, you could see that I am a sucker for complete referencing for every images (big or small or tiny) and videos. If I were to reference that same image (look at the banner at the top of the page), I would be citing 'source:' instead. Another update for my working development - I am also part of the Reference Team as of today (16th September 2013). So I am now basically in this equation: Interactive Team (60%) + Reference Team (40%) = A stressed-out Azizah (hahaha). Or you might have been hearing myself quoting this, "I've been ripped into 2 parts, so don't get yourself (and myself) confused!" or "I am a gypsy, I'm constantly on the move." If you are lucky, you will be hearing both - which is unlikely. Next - the Great Beginning for the Senior Library website - Susan helped to broadcast on iSams for volunteers to contribute their voices for recordings. So far, only one student from the 6th form (beautiful, male voice) responded. Thank you Nathan, you are a big help. Looks like I have to do the one on one approach and offering instant rewards. So it is still progressing. The Book Awards is populating and updating the latest titles and winners. One more update - Summer Reading Transition. A memo has been sent out to Phil Edwards (Head of Year-7) to instruct all the Year-7 to update their their reading trails. It is progressing slowwwwwlllyyyy.... Last update for this blog - Halloween Display is still a work in-progress. *peace dot!* Here are some highlights on what was going on for the Y6 Transition!
PS: I have remove all the photographs, due to school policy on uploading of photographs consisting TTS school children. For the past weeks, our team were very busy putting the materials together for the upcoming Summer Reading programme. It is a lot of work. And it was exciting too. This year is my first time getting involved 101% in the works. Our team did the brainstorming, the research, searching of the graphics, printing & pasting, the database etc. I have to thank all who were involved (you know who you are) from the pre-production to its final birth. Let me introduce to you this year's Summer Reading Transition - QUEST 2013. Last year, I was part of the team to compile and add reading materials to the Inhospitable Places Transition 2012. For this year, it is slightly easier as most of the work had been done in 2012. This time round, our team spent much effort on the orientation & the Summer Reading transition instead. Nonetheless, I've managed to take some photos to record the activity.
It is day 3 of the Transition and the last class for the week. Not many photos were taken as the students were the shy lot. Nonetheless, I've managed to capture their journey of knowing the Senior Library.
One of them said that the Senior Library is so cool. And I replied that it is because we have the coolest librarians around. Hahaha! Then, I heard someone said that it is because we have the smartest students.... Now, did I forgotten to mention that this class is not only shy but they are cheeky too?! PS: I have remove all the photographs, due to school policy on uploading of photographs consisting TTS school children. The Transition lessons part 1 are in progress – QR codes, stations etc. Part 2 of the transition is about the summer reading programme and Jacqui wants a new theme.
I’ve set up a contest (just a small one to motivate all of us). I know that the ladies I am working with have excellent ideas. To encourage them further, there would be a prize for winning theme. Of course, they could collaborate and submit their ideas as a group (prize has to be shared, ya!). There would be steps to determine the winner: 1) Compile all the ideas & themes 2) Just like the recent Malaysian Election, we will have our very first voting (I will have to figure out how to do that online) 3) Top 3 themes with the highest votes would be evaluated by Jacqui 4) The winning entry would be picked by Jacqui So if you are reading this blog and are interested to try, submit your wonderful ideas using the link below. Pick a Theme for Summer Reading 2013 Submit as many entry as you could... I have not decided on the closing date of the contest yet! I will be on leave the whole of next week. Yahoo! Nah! Not really, I have 2 exam papers to write. Anyway, I am looking forward to your entries (and the end of my exams). *peace* Today is the second day for the Transition class. We have got 2 classes back to back. And we are 2 people down. Though we are busy for the whole day with the Year 11 having their GCSE study leaves, IB exams for Year 13 and the Year 6 running around, the Interactive Zone is hanging on and managing very well with the 2 'young girls' and their ever-supportive 'Battleaxe Galactic'. So here is a reward for the hard work in the morning, photos from the Transition classes.
Number of the day is 2. PS: I have remove all the photographs, due to school policy on uploading of photographs consisting TTS school children. Today is the first day for the Year 6 Transition. Excitement is in the air, QR codes to be hunted down and questions to be answered. To summaries all these, below are the photos.
PS: I have remove all the photographs, due to school policy on uploading of photographs consisting TTS school children. World Book Day is out and Book Week is in. That is the main display for March.
The Boss wanted our team to focus on Book Week which is happening end of February 2013. It is a school thing and only happens every 2 years. The last time we did it was in 2011 and the students had to dress up in their favourite book characters. It was quite a memorable event. There was one who dressed up as Mario and there were a few Harry Potters. This year, the school is focusing on Mystery/Crime. The Boss wanted us to make used of the technology e.g. QR codes - QR-acking Codes. So here I decided to write a story. This is my first written story that I have been wanting to write. (I have always wanted to write a picture book. So here it is, but unlike a picture book - this requires interaction with students.) I would like to thank The Boss who gave me this opportunity. So here it is. QR-acking Codes, Who Pushed Humpty Dumpty? I'm in the midst of building an other website for Jacqui's upcoming lesson for Year 8 - CONFLICT. It is nothing new as it is the same as the Inhospitable Places. Some books are overlapping so it is not that difficult but it is time-consuming. Nonetheless, I learned about the writing-styles of certain authors too e.g. Joan Lingard, Elizabeth Laird, Deborah Ellis, Michael Morpurgo, Jame Riordan and etc.
But there was one book that captured me, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Actually it was the movie trailer that interest me. So I'm linking the clip for you to view. We have the DVD if you are interested to watch. I would like to thank Susan, Suzanne, Uma & Atiqah for trying out the dry-run last Friday. It went quite well and here are the findings and feedback (solutions are in red): - Slide on page 8 is not working (Slide has been replaced) - Page 7: to replace other languages to ‘Other Languages’ (corrected) - Page 9: loan not load (corrected) - Page 13: Case Closed not Case Close (corrected) - A slide on how to use the iPod is needed to guide the students (created) click here to view - To adjust the iPad volume to medium low Below are the stations of the QR Codes for your reference: Station 1: Presentation Area Station 2: Fiction shelf IBB Station 3: Pillar near the DVD collection Station 4: In Pod 3 Mac station Station 5: Circ counter near the AC switches Station 6: Pasted on the notice board near the main entrance Station 7: Languages shelf Dutch Station 8: Biography shelf book cap Station 9: OPAC 1 Poetry shelf Station 10: BBS 3 Station 11: Games@Lunch display board Station 12: Susan’s Desk Station 13: Graphic Novel shelf *Please note that there are 4 iPads would be stationed at station 5, 6, 8 & 9. There are a total of 13 iPod Touches belonging to Junior School ICT (contact person Lata). Additional information from Susan, below are the classes for the transition: Week 11 Monday, 11/06/2012: 10.40 – 11.40am (P3) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Tuesday, 12/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1) Wed, 13/06/2012: 9.10 - 10.10am (P2) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Thursday, 14/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Friday, 15/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Week 12 Monday, 18/06/2012: 9.10 - 10.10am (P2) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Tuesday, 19/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1) Wed, 20/06/2012: 9.10 - 10.10am (P2) & 10.40 – 11.40am (P3) Thursday, 21/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1) & 1.45 – 2.45pm (P5) Friday, 22/06/2012: 8.10 – 9.10am (P1)
The transition orientation will be going from Monday morning, 11 June 2012. Year 6 would be coming to Senior Library for orientation facilitated by Jacqui.
If you are wondering, what it is all about visit our Student iZone (use the drop-down button on Orientation). This website is for students’ use. They could participate in online contest or quiz (in the future). As for now, they use it to get the Orientation questions. How do they do that? Basically, they would be using iPod Touch to capture the QR codes (pasted all over the Interactive Zone) to get the questions. An answer slip would be given to them at the beginning of the orientation – so that they could jot down their answers. The questions are simple and specially crafted to enhance their thinking skill, searching skill and communication skill. Elements such as reading, listening, observing and interacting were also embedded in the questions through videos, podcasts and slides. We are doing a dry-run this afternoon from 3pm – 4pm. If you are interested to participate, do let us know. This project is jointly built by the iZone Team (a.k.a Interactive Zone Team) I've created another Weebly. This is solely for students' use. We are gearing to put more stuff online now as the School encourages students the use of iPad. Promotion, contests and what's not would be included in Jacqui's lesson.
The upcoming project done by all of the Interactive Zone team would be the Transition 2012 Orientation. Year 6 would be coming in to explore the Senior Library. They would be using the iTouch to hunt for the stations (1-11) and get to answer questions. The iTouches would be used to capture the QR codes and get access to the questions on the website created just for this. Another on-going project which Atiqah, Nurul & I are consolidating is the Inhospitable Places. This is to encourage the Year 6 to read books of their age and also to expose themselves to a different theme. This website is a compilation of books of the theme appended with the summary, a video, a podcast, online excerpt and many more. This particular project is time-consuming but it is highly successful and effective for teaching and learning. Again, the students would be using iPads to access the titles. We can now forgo the tedious work of printing and such. We now go online. The downside is that the Internet is super slow and Not sure if they think that it is great. But I think that it is an awesome idea.
How about putting the contests online. I bet students will be accessible to it and participate instantly. I am so into Weebly these days which driving me to do more things, INTERESTING things. So I started an account just as a communication platform with the others. Sometimes it is just difficult meet with everyone at one go. Hope that this keeps all of us going and on the ball. And also to get input from the others informally.
Anyway, I have been contributing to several blogs in school. So below are just some of those: 1) http://ttsy9read.ning.com - Reading trails for Y9 (invitation only) and would be going on for the whole year 2) http://ttsyr7.edublogs.org - Transition Summer Reading for Y6 going on to Y7, happening in July 3) http://4u2read.edublogs.org - TTS Book Awards Club for Carnegie members, consist of Carnegie & Red Dot books And 4) http://interactivezonetts.weebly.com/ - the platform which I am blogging about. We have own own individual blogs related to what we are up to and its progress. So far it went well and I am happy that it is well-received. They are enthusiastic about the blog and I think it will be a potential site to be an official sharing platform for all TLRC. |
