This month's displays is based on simplicity. In conjunction with the World Book Day cum Shakespeare and Copyright Day, I have produced the above.
There's something about William - This is a very challenging subject of display. I don't want to showcase something that is common e.g. Shakespeare's photo and his name. (Honestly, I had never taken a second look at a Shakespeare display - I find it boring....) Therefore, I want something different. Very different that any 13-year-old or any adult would have a second look. It took days to come up with this concept. I have the title ready. The title I chose was, 'There's something about William!' (inspired by a movie "There's something about Mary'). I thought it was a good title for the display. All I need next was a really good picture. While in the midst of searching, Susan handed me a copy of Romeo & Juliet DVD (feat. Leonardo DiCaprio). It was a popular movie during my teenage years and I remembered watching the movies few times. I love the songs... well, anyway, I thought the cover was nice and I tweaked the picture to suit the background of the board (using Fireworks). And ta...da... It had positive responses. Disclaimer: Photo was taken from: William Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet Music Edition by 20th Century Fox (1996). What is Copyright? - It wouldn't be fair not to feature the works of the Reference Zone. The team has a well-maintained libguides for students. This display is dedicated to the team as well as the Copyright Day. I used the word cloud software which is readily available online. If you noticed the texts in the graphic (the logo was created using MS Word) were made up of words of forms of creative work subjected to copyright e.g. Dance, films, artwork, etc. So there, displays for April-May. Up next, displays for our new 'baby'

This is the video evidence of the muckup happened last week. Watch it unfolds... Found this on Youtube! Today, the Year 13s pulled off a very smart prank on us in the Library. They hidden many alarm clocks in many different locations and the clocks were set up to ring on different timings. I have to compliment these students who had came up with this smart and tactical idea. It got me excited and some of the officers here too however, there were so many hidden alarm clocks and it got many of us (including the students who genuinely wanted to study) annoyed. We've got teachers and other excited students hunted down the noisy clocks. By the end of the day, we have confiscated 13 alarm clocks. There were more out there but were collected by the 'team of pranksters'. Now we know who you are! One word of advise to the pranksters: 5 to 6 alarm clocks are sufficient to keep the fun going. If you planted more than that, it is just very annoying. Less is more... *peace* The perks of working in the Library. Not many librarians or LOs stress this often enough.
It is so nice to be among the first ones to touch new books. Touch the clean and new pages. Smell the new, freshly unwrapped books. Process and catalogue them. Be the first to take a sneak peek of new titles.... and etc.... Oh new books.... So many new books to catalogue during the holidays. This is my second attempt using Prezi and first presentation. It is easy to use however I must know what the contents are. Initially, I wanted to use MS Powerpoint but the software is not available on the reference desk 2. Out of desperation, I decided to use Prezi for this short presentation and demo. I must say, "Not bad!" - for the flexibility of the Prezi. I could retrieve the file online via email. Aside from the above, we had a training on Photoshop. Atiqah shared her tips and tricks on using the software. During the hands-on training, I managed to do the image below (not entirely). This is a dedication image to our tutor, Atiqah!
If Hollywood has 'The Hunger Games', Texas A&M University Library has 'The Research Games'. Enjoy the spoof! Have you heard of imadeface? I've not until recently. Atiqah shared this cool app where we could make our very own 'avatar'. Though I tried to make one myself after so many attempts, and came up with this. Yes, I know what you all would be thinking. "Not the same, lah!!!" Well, it is hard if your hairstyle is not in the list. The app doesn't have additional accessories like a hat or a headscarf etc. Oh well, but I like this app a lot. I will play around with this app when I have more free time at home. For now, my (unofficial) avatar is on the left. *Peace* PS: You could download this app via your App Store. The purpose of trying out this app was to revamp the look of our in-house communication website - which is associated to this blog. So, watch out for the launch of our new look and see if you could match the avatars to its owners. Some said that they can't leave home without their phone - this includes my hubby. Some cannot survive without a Wifi hotspot - also including my hubby again. Some can't even work without a brilliant assistant - this bit is according to Richard Brandson.
And I can't work, move and be efficient at the same time without these in my lovely, big bag: 1) Smartphone with internet connectivity 2) Mini iPad (very important if you have a one-year-old) 3) Wet wipes (see no. 2 - more to wipe the iPad) 4) Lipstick (must look good even if you are stressed out) 5) Pen "What?! No book? What kind of Library Officer are you??" or "I thought you work in the library, whaaattt....." Please note that these are typical Singaporean-accented remarks which I always got from both friends and relatives. They are so oh-so-not-IT-savvy. *wink-wink* Let me explain.... I Google a lot mostly in the train - reading the news, watching YouTube, socializing with Facebook friends, lurking around Linkedin, reading other libraries blogs, challenging myself with a card game, online shopping (not all the time) and planning on what to cook for dinner. I could do so many things during my 1 hour train ride to/from work - while standing without a pole to hold on to or seated (if I'm lucky) - and replying to my hubby via SMS & WhatsApp. Sometimes, i toggled using both phone and the iPad. Yes, we women could multitask very well - I must stress on this! When you are a mummy, you would know that keeping your infant still is the No. 1 challenge. That is why the mini iPad came in second place. Faris would be learning his ABC, singing to Pororo songs, looking at some educational flash cards etc - doing all this while I'm doing housework or I just simple needed my 1/2 hours rest or when I 'm doing my school assignments. I must thank Steve Jobs for inventing this device. It helped me a lot. The wet wipes is mainly to wipe the screen of the iPad as Faris likes to put his hands in his mouth and then touch my poor iPad. I could see the residue of his doings on the iPad every morning when I'm in the office. My poor colleagues would always heard me screaming his name. To my colleagues - you know who you are, my sincere apologies. Lipsticks makes a drastic change in your appearance. I would like to include shoes but it is not practical as my bag is not big enough. I have 2 pairs under my desk. Back to lipsticks, I have several tones of colours to match my mood. The pretty pink is on my desk, the muted is in the drawer and the all-purpose-all-occasion lipcolour would be in my bag. I would not go wrong putting that one on. Also, you must always look good all the time. The existence of the trusty pen in the bag - you just would never know when you'll need it. STEVE JOBS - THANK YOU, LAH! - for making the iPad a mini too. It is light & handy in the ladies' bag and I could carry all my 6 titles of books around with the comfort of using Overdrive. I must thank Uma for the Overdrive training she gave few weeks back. Now, my account with the Digital Library has reached its quota of 6 titles and I have 4 titles on reservation. So, what no book? I have 6 ebooks. *Peace* It was nice to come together as the whole team, TLRC and able to mingle with the Junior TLAs. We had some fun, meet other new colleagues, shared some valuable insights of working in Tanglin and of course, find out what Bluesky is all about. I am sharing some photos below where we are all busy discussing on the jobs we do (1) regularly, (2) occasionally and (3) no or limited opportunity to do. Based on our team's discussion, we found that all of us, LOs have been handling different and diverse aspect of library work. What LO A is doing is different from LO B and of course the different target audience we are dealing with. Also, we found that we have a pretty long list of (3). We took this chance to single out a few things listed in (3) that we thought might be interesting to include in our line of work. The photos below are based on my teams effort, therefore it is not unanimous as the whole TLRC or Senior Library. So, what have I learned? I learnt that a LO's job is not a generalist. We are not a stereotype where people think that we read books all day. NO! The job itself is challenging and fast paced as we work with technology. We can be more powerful than Google and other search engines - just look at our TTS Libguides & interactive zone (organised information, simplicity & facilitate learning in an interactive way). We are, of course & definitely, not an introvert - you can meet the lady who sits at the bottom of the stairs (a.k.a Mdm Battleaxe - just kidding). But most of all, LOs are kind and the nicest people. Am I right? (*I could hear a standing ovation*). Teamwork is all about putting people with different skills together to deliver quality work. It is like the picture (left), mixing vanilla ice-cream, some nuts and maybe a bar of chocolate = yummy-ness. A good thing alone is still a good thing. But a few good things combine together is UNBELIEVABLE! Well, this is just me trying to associate my afternoon snack with teamwork. My opinion, that is! There was so many events to highlight in March. Normally, I will build at least 2 displays per month. This March, I made 5 displays. Well, it was not an easy feat especially when the creative juice was not flowing at all and it reflected on some of my displays. I don't do displays for the sake of doing it but it was just that the display doesn't look the same as planned, which frustrates me! How did those window display designers do it?
Anyway, the 6 displays are as follows: 1) Lose Yourselves in the World of Poetry - which is my favourite for the month. I love the colour scheme and the simplicity. I adore the little boy under the tree reading. The picture was from a book entitled Michael Rosen's A to Z. Citing of the source has been included to the picture. Anyway, I really adore this display. 2) Earth Hour - This display was a challenge. The logo (which was allowed to use as the website said so and must include the TM logo too) was not in high definition format and I have to look for ways of blowing it up without ending up with a pixelated form. The Singapore riverside in silhouette was done using a real photo and Photoshop. It was pretty amazing especially learning that Photoshop has so many functions and it was a great learning journey. The book cover (Subject: Sustainabiliy or Sustainable Living) was done in Publisher. The Senior Library has a good collection on this subject. Knowing me, the fussy pot - I would only choose colourful and vibrant covers. 3) International Women's Day - well, I've blogged about this earlier. 4) John Boyne - this window display was a quick fix. The poster was created by Atiqah (our very own Director of Design). I just simply blow it up and print it out. That was for the front side of the display. I made a mistake with the reversed side - i printed many copies of the A4 sized poster instead of the blown up image. Therefore, that was what I came out with for the reverse side of the display. I called it deliberate guerrilla publicity. Anyway, John Boyne was unwell and cancelled his trip to Tanglin. Therefore, there goes my opportunity to have his autograph signed in my book. Well, I hope he would make another trip to Singapore soon! 5) Easter 2013 - it was a simple display using Fireworks. Some of the props were from last year's Easter. The giant egg was an additional to this year - it didn't look as planned. I am quite disappointed with the look! There, you go! Not all displays I made were fantastic. I've created them all - the fab, the flab and the ugly. You name it - I have it! Haha! |
