Not many people know what we were up to during the summer. Well, we had new compactors for the textbooks, new books & textbooks to be cataloged and many, many more... The video below sums it all up.

This year's Raya had been both a joyous and sad occasion for my family. A joyous one because we could gather together as one very big happy family as it is hard to meet one another due to work and other commitments. Aside from that, I am an aunt again and on the same day, my family has lost a significant figure in our life. My late-grandfather has returned to Allah at the age of 84 in the arms of my father and my grandmother in the wee-hour of the morning.
The plans lined up for the post-National Day holiday had been scrapped. There were hordes of relatives, family friends, non-Muslim neighbours and total strangers came over to pay their last respects. I knew that my late grandfather was a very friendly man but I didn't realise that he was very famous in the district. Though we always plan for the future (in my case, it is week by week basis), the final plan would be affirmed by the Divine. I may have not completed all of my displays and had even missed attending the IFLA volunteering briefing last Sat, but I would be missing the jolly, old man sorely. This week was a super fast week with so much and so little time to complete. I am so relief that I could complete at least one display board before the week ends. I'll try to prepare one display next week and to finish off some cataloging of the new textbooks, which the Interactive Team have not managed to fully complete.
I have a confession to make! After almost 2 months of not doing any display, my cutting skills and creative juice have run dry. It is so hard to get started and decide on what concept, colour scheme, content etc to be put on display. So I cheated a little for this display. I re-used some of the images displayed for the same theme last year like the car and the checkered boxes. I threw away the letterings and replaced with a new one (have to thank Atiqah for introducing me this cute and user-friendly online software ipiccy). The software has so many beautiful and creative fonts to choose from. And so, I used the one that looked like tiny lights. Though it didn't look very alluring on the board as I thought it would be. As for the content, I have 2 ideas to work with. 1) To hold a poll on student's favourite team/driver and 2) to show the champions of the 2013 F1 championships on the World map. So I chose no 2 because based on last year's experience, students' participation is not very encouraging. (I am still working on that - though QR codes are around in the library but students don't seemed to be using them). It is quite difficult to find a suitable World map. I have to take into account of the colour, resolution, file size, quality of the images. Next challenge is to plot the champions on the map (their photos in the countries which they had won), look at the display and you'll see what I mean. It is also to brush up on your geography skills. You would want to check the atlas if you think I have plotted wrongly - Concise Atlas of the World (Ref 912). So who do you think would be the champion for the F1 Singtel Singapore? I bet it would be Sebastian Vettel. It must be Sabestian Vettel because to date, he has won 4 championship and also he happens to be my all-time fav driver. I have not been blogging regularly than usual this week. It has been 'super-duper-crazy-busy' week. With the (1)textbook processing, (2) collection weeding, (3) Y7 textbook allocation (yes, we started a bit early this year) and (4) moving the new textbooks into the Interactive Zone, to make space for more uncatalogue new textbooks (Yes, there are more books to catalogue on Monday!!!). Only 4 jobs? Yes, only these 4 time-consuming and strenuous works that keeps this month of Ramadhan a busy one for us. Last Ramadhan (also fall during the summer) was equally busy and challenging. This year's Ramadhan is a little different - our team (the 3As&1N) is more prepared and much more systematic. At least I am more prepared than last year and know what is expected and am armed with all the things I need. Nonetheless, I am proud with ourselves. *a round of applause, please*
5 must-have things to bring along when you are out renewing books in the classrooms:
1) 1 bottle of hand sanitation spray 2) 2 portable & reliable scanner / a hand-held offline scanner 3) A big hand carry bag to carry the items above 4) A trolley - the one with solid wheels 5) Your partner-in-crime who would suggest you to log onto Youtube and play some good music while scanning all those dusty books. *I'm a happy gal!* Just sharing this cute image I got from the Facebook. Anyway, enjoy the summer holidays for those who are going home to the UK, Australia and the rest of the World. To those who are still on the 'Little Red Dot', just hang in there! On another note, Bintan.... Here we come!
Oh, it didn't stop there after the tea making.... There is counter manning, book cataloging, making sure that the students are studying, etc., etc., etc.... I would not bore you further with those details. If time permits, I might share tips on how to keep the display-life longer. As for now, I am in the midst of planning the upcoming summer reading program.
The perks of working in the Library. Not many librarians or LOs stress this often enough.
It is so nice to be among the first ones to touch new books. Touch the clean and new pages. Smell the new, freshly unwrapped books. Process and catalogue them. Be the first to take a sneak peek of new titles.... and etc.... Oh new books.... So many new books to catalogue during the holidays. After tearing down 4 displays during the Xmas/New Year holidays, I have many empty boards. Not a great start for the year, though. Fortunately, our team had came up with a list of potential themes and topic for displays. As the exams are around the corner, I took this opportunity to make this display [see left]. The following themes will be up for January & February 2013. I could drag them till March 2013 if there is no interesting themes to display (the one in red are new): - Games@Lunch for Y7 (permanent display) - Meet Mack & his iPad (permanent display) - What are we reading? Carnegie Book Award Winners (permanent display) - Charles Dickens Quiz (permanent display) - Scoring 'A's - FESTIVAL: Happy Chinese New Year 2013 - Books are the new black Photos will be uploaded soon! To see the list of themes for 2013, click here. It is not everyday that you wake up with a mountain view! This was taken at 6am, New Zealand time (1am Singapore). It was cold, though in summer. I love it here. Perfect for those people who likes to complain that the office is not cold enough (me, especially). For those who hated the AC in the office, this place is really unsuitable. You have been warned! It is really cold unlike our office which is at the lowest & highest 26 degrees C. Here it is low at 9 degrees C and high at only 13 degrees C. So, anywhere in NZ is really not the best choice for your holiday destination! Enjoy the picture, anyways! - me writing this blog. I hope to come back here again and this time, it would be with Faris who would be much older. This is the first year of Raya for me to celebrate with my boy, Faris. It is a very meaningful year for us as a family. It is rather exciting indeed as everyone (my mum especially) fusses over what clothes Faris should be wearing and right up to what 'songkok' (religious cap) he should put on. So here, here, feast your eyes to the photo on the left. Yes, that is Faris and his not-so-glamorous mama. All effort of glamorising went to Faris. And ooh yes, he collected so many money packets these two days and many more would be collected this weekend. I think by the end of the month, he would be collecting more money than his mama's monthly income. Hmmmm, I think..... Faris should buy his own milk formula with his collected income from now on. He is richer than me... Boo hoo hoo.... Anyway, Selamat Hari Raya to all my Muslim colleagues. Mohon ampun dan maaf, zahir & batin kalau ade terkasar bahasa, tersinggung perasaan. Makan dan minum harap dihalalkan, ye! And to the rest of my colleagues, I hope you have enjoyed the holiday. And oh, enjoy the pineapple tarts!!! Well, this is what my hubs and I enjoyed from Phuket (see picture). Pure white sandy beaches rimmed with sparkling blue water, aye?! No, lah! It is the monsoon season hence the picturesque beaches is nowhere in sight. And, the tide is so low that we could walked across the seabed and see crabs scampering into their holes. I can't say that it is an enjoyable short getaway, we were not well - both of us. I was still nursing my gastritis, gatro-enteritis, dyspepsia flatulenc (a.k.a diarrhea lah) and my hubs was down with fever. I was the 'Thai nurse' -ka.... The mango desert (left) is the remedy for us both. Yummy! Not forgetting the ginger tea. (Serenity was like an overseas treatment center, hahaha) Oh well, we enjoyed the hotel facilities instead e.g. the pool-side (which we slept in the shade). It is a nice hotel and I think there were only less than 10 couples there staying at the hotel. So, I have to say that it is a decent holiday. Anyway, we will be back next time - with 'vengeance' (we are not done with Phuket yet!!!) |
