Day 3 was a pretty long day for me. I have to be at the Suntec Convention Hall by 7 am. It was such a hot day and luckily there were bottles of mineral water being distributed all day long. So I was there at the bus bay from morning till afternoon, took attendance, mingled with the delegates while sharing information on Singapore's tourist attraction and made sure that they boarded the correct bus etc. I had plenty of opportunities to network with the delegates on day 3. I spoken to librarians from Iceland, shared photos with a gentleman from Denmark (who also shared videos of his travel experiences in S.E. Asia), phototaking with delegates from Hawaii, talked about library experiences with librarians from Australia, Macau, Hong Kong and (not sure how I managed it but...) communicated with librarians from Kazakhstan and Krysakstan - we used a lot of sign gestures, And I got to go to the Library Supply Centre... You could enjoy the photos below.... It was an exciting day.

I didn't managed to talk many pictures as I am on duty at the SI headset counter (I am a very good volunteer, heehee). I met many delegates from so many nations. They were really nice. Most of them knows how to use the headset so I was really lucky.
Well, this is an update of what is going on during the volunteer briefing I attended last week.
Though I had missed the first session that Saturday due to the funeral, I've managed to catch up with the important stuff last Thursday. I had collected my gears, polo-tee and familiarized myself to the place. I think I am all set for my 3 days of volunteering of 79th IFLA WLIC. There will be 3,321 delegates from 120 countries - most of them are from Singapore, the US and Australia. They will be attending and participating in the International Summit of the Book, special meetings with the Directors of National Libraries, pre-conferences and satellite meetings as well as public talks (from 17 - 23 August 2013). Mui Sin, Yati, Joana and me would be among the 271 volunteers to assist the delegates and participants around. If you are interested to look at the photos and the happenings, follow the IFLA WLIC 2013 Singapore Facebook or@ifla2013 and @wlic2013 via Twitter. This year's Raya had been both a joyous and sad occasion for my family. A joyous one because we could gather together as one very big happy family as it is hard to meet one another due to work and other commitments. Aside from that, I am an aunt again and on the same day, my family has lost a significant figure in our life. My late-grandfather has returned to Allah at the age of 84 in the arms of my father and my grandmother in the wee-hour of the morning.
The plans lined up for the post-National Day holiday had been scrapped. There were hordes of relatives, family friends, non-Muslim neighbours and total strangers came over to pay their last respects. I knew that my late grandfather was a very friendly man but I didn't realise that he was very famous in the district. Though we always plan for the future (in my case, it is week by week basis), the final plan would be affirmed by the Divine. I may have not completed all of my displays and had even missed attending the IFLA volunteering briefing last Sat, but I would be missing the jolly, old man sorely. Just like I wrote last week, time flies quickly with so much to do and with so little time. It is even worst if you have long holidays within the week and it happened that you are celebrating that major festive holiday in the same week. Looks like the works for the Interactive Team would have to be 'snow-balled' to the following week. WARNING MODE: There will/might be a tsunami of new textbooks in Week 7.
This week was a super fast week with so much and so little time to complete. I am so relief that I could complete at least one display board before the week ends. I'll try to prepare one display next week and to finish off some cataloging of the new textbooks, which the Interactive Team have not managed to fully complete.
I have a confession to make! After almost 2 months of not doing any display, my cutting skills and creative juice have run dry. It is so hard to get started and decide on what concept, colour scheme, content etc to be put on display. So I cheated a little for this display. I re-used some of the images displayed for the same theme last year like the car and the checkered boxes. I threw away the letterings and replaced with a new one (have to thank Atiqah for introducing me this cute and user-friendly online software ipiccy). The software has so many beautiful and creative fonts to choose from. And so, I used the one that looked like tiny lights. Though it didn't look very alluring on the board as I thought it would be. As for the content, I have 2 ideas to work with. 1) To hold a poll on student's favourite team/driver and 2) to show the champions of the 2013 F1 championships on the World map. So I chose no 2 because based on last year's experience, students' participation is not very encouraging. (I am still working on that - though QR codes are around in the library but students don't seemed to be using them). It is quite difficult to find a suitable World map. I have to take into account of the colour, resolution, file size, quality of the images. Next challenge is to plot the champions on the map (their photos in the countries which they had won), look at the display and you'll see what I mean. It is also to brush up on your geography skills. You would want to check the atlas if you think I have plotted wrongly - Concise Atlas of the World (Ref 912). So who do you think would be the champion for the F1 Singtel Singapore? I bet it would be Sebastian Vettel. It must be Sabestian Vettel because to date, he has won 4 championship and also he happens to be my all-time fav driver. |
